The Chrysler Building was the tallest skyscraper in the world for the first eleven months. Then the Empire State Building took it's spot. Architects were very competitive at the time of the building's construction. The Bank of Manhattan Trust Building was being finished at the same time on Wall Street. William van Alen - the architect - led everyone to believe that the Chrysler building would be smaller. By constructing the crown, which was 183 feet tall, inside the skyscraper so it wouldn't be seen, then adding the crown to the building in less than two hours - the Chrysler Building surpassed the Bank of Manhattan Trust Building by 36 meters. It's ego that brings us this monument. New York is filled with illustrations of the human ego.... and that we love about this city !
